Who doesn’t love school trips? Possibly Saruogi, who’s trying to fit in amongst the tight-knit friend group that is our main cast and turns out to be an even sadder sack than Izumi。 But Izumi’s not going to be deterred from making this trip memorable by anybody, not even his sulky girlfriend…If there’s one thing that this series deserves all the credit for, it’s putting the lie to the idea that you can’t make a good manga out of a couple dating (Io Sakisaka, take notes!)。 You can and it turns ou Who doesn’t love school trips? Possibly Saruogi, who’s trying to fit in amongst the tight-knit friend group that is our main cast and turns out to be an even sadder sack than Izumi。 But Izumi’s not going to be deterred from making this trip memorable by anybody, not even his sulky girlfriend…If there’s one thing that this series deserves all the credit for, it’s putting the lie to the idea that you can’t make a good manga out of a couple dating (Io Sakisaka, take notes!)。 You can and it turns out that it doesn’t take that much effort。The field trip arc is okay, but first we have to properly introduce poor Saruogi, who has a literal ‘save the cat’ moment to let you know he’s a decent guy beneath all that anxiety。 I think part of his point is to show what Izumi would be like without Shikimori, but I do think our boy is a bit better than that。Either way, that section is super fun, but we also get the knowing acknowledgment that fitting a new person into a group of established friends is hard, no matter how welcoming they are (the seating arrangement during travel subtly speaks volumes)。 There’s also one of the strangest (and best) Pokémon gags I’ve seen in ages。The field trip is perfectly fine, though it doesn’t go nearly as far as it needs to distinguish itself from a million other field trips, though leaning into Izumi’s boundless enthusiasm is a smart choice。 Having missed one school trip due to a cold, he is determined to make this one the best ever (as are his overprotective parents)。With the actual story out of the way, we needs must focus on Shikimori and Izumi content and that’s where this story, as expected, takes to the skies。 Dentists everywhere quake in fear, because the sugar is flying。Well, sort of。 One of the best parts of this pairing is that these two are pure hormone bombs, at least within manga’s depiction of polite Japanese society, and when they start getting too into one another the best moments tend to happen。Shikimori’s cool demeanour gets most of the job done, but Izumi is totally learning how to wrangle his girlfriend in the most adorable fashion (Shikimori is so pouty this volume when she can’t see him that it’s just the damn cutest)。Still, Shikimori lands the deadliest blows。 The two of them talking on a swing set leads to poor Izumi’s mind being blown, but there’s a moment with an impromptu Pocky game later on that rivals the one in Rent-A-Girlfriend for sheer heat (which, for the record, is a sizzler and one of the only good parts of that series) and it is one of the hungriest things Shikimori has ever done。 And that bonus manga? Damn, girl。Toss in some really fun Hachimitsu moments (she reminds me of Grimace from the old McDonald’s ads, oddly) and general tomfoolery, plus Izumi getting some results of his own with leading the field trip? That’s a full volume right there。4。5 stars - 4 stars for most of the content, plus two epic Shikimori moments makes for an easy round up on this one。 Never change, you two。 Not the most memorable the story’s ever been, but my blinders are fully on for this series at this point。 。。。more
